Bachelor of Science in Nutrition: Wellness Option

Program Overview

With a growing emphasis on preventative health care and an interest in overall health, wellness and improved quality of life among consumers and employers, Auburn University's degree in Nutrition with an option in Wellness is designed to prepare students for successful career entry into the broad health and wellness professions. A multitude of career opportunities are available throughout the philanthropic, public and private sectors. Employers, employees and private citizens alike have great interest in healthier work, social, and/or living environments, causing an increase in the need for wellness professionals Successful graduates will be able to provide the education, program development, and counselling necessary to help citizens lead a healthier and higher quality life. With a background in nutrition your passion for health and wellness becomes an excellent career path.

Mission:

The mission of the Nutrition Science major at Auburn University is to provide a high quality program of study that integrates the core nutrition science courses with additional courses in chemistry, physics, and biology to prepare graduates for entry into professional/graduate schools or nutrition-related careers dedicated to enhancing human well-being and quality of life.

The NTWE curriculum will:

  1. Produce graduates that are competitive for acceptance into postgraduate academic programs.
  2. Produce graduates with a sound scientific understanding of complex nutrition issues related to health, disease, and wellness.
  3. Produce graduates committed to the enhancement of human well-being and quality of life.

The following student learning outcomes (SLOs) are comprehensive for the Nutritional Sciences Wellness option. While there is not a specific accrediting agency for the Wellness option, student learning outcomes are aligned with disciplinary standards.

Upon completion of the BS in Nutrition-Wellness curriculum, students will be able to:

  1. Describe the digestion, absorption, and metabolism of the energy-containing nutrients, carbohydrates, lipids and proteins.
  2. Describe the function of vitamins and minerals in relation to their role in human health.
  3. Describe the components of foods and apply this knowledge through culinary and cooking experiments.
  4. Assess nutrient needs and recommendations associated with different stages of the life cycle.
  5. Develop and present a community-based grant proposal for a local organization.
  6. Plan, design, and deliver a theory-based, behavior-focused community nutrition program.
  7. Use the e-portfolio as a mechanism for professional development in Nutrition and Wellness.
