Community engagement across cultures
The College of Human Sciences, in collaboration with Stenden University, offers students semester-long study abroad experiences focusing on one of these subject areas: Community Engagement, International Hotel and Restaurant Management, Lodge Management, Strategic Hospitality Management, or Hospitality Operations Management.
This case-based learning environment prepares students to work with multi-disciplinary teams, and engage as global citizens alongside fellow students from across the globe. The program’s community partners engage students to solve real-world problems while immersed in and experiencing a culture that is not their own. Human Development and Family Science majors and Global Studies in Human Sciences majors have the option for this course of study to count as their internship requirement. Hunger Studies minors may also use these 12 credit hours towards the Hunger Studies minor.
The course that is offered as part of this program are HUSC 5940 (12 credit hours + internship option)

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months following your scheduled time abroad and must have two totally blank (unstamped) visa pages to enter South Africa. Students who have traveled to WHO-designated yellow fever countries are required to present their current and valid International Certificate of Vaccination as approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) (commonly called a “yellow card”). This requirement is imposed on travelers flying to South Africa via yellow fever countries, even when passengers transiting a yellow fever country do not deplane in the yellow fever country (e.g., flights stopping in Senegal, Ghana, or Kenya), or if the plane makes an unscheduled landing in a yellow fever country. As a precaution, all travelers to South Africa should carry their original yellow vaccination card.
