PORTUGAL PRE-HEALTH

Overview

One of the most beautiful port cities on the northwest coast of Portugal, Viana do Castelo offers remarkable charm as a place to explore while earning 40 shadowing hours. This opportunity will be two weeks in the summer and has been created for sophomore or junior students interested in the healthcare field. For the majority of the trip, participants will observe and learn from doctors in a local hospital, switching up each day to see a vast number of specialties. When not shadowing, there will be time for excursions to see the culture of the location.

The city’s natural beauty is exemplified by the meandering Lima River that gently flows through the town and the stunning Atlantic Ocean that graces its shores, making it a haven for beach enthusiasts and those seeking tranquil coastal experiences. The historical architecture, including the Gothic-style Santa Maria Church and the grand 19th-century Customs House, provides glimpses into the town's past. One of the most iconic landmarks in Viana do Castelo is the Sanctuary of Santa Luzia, a magnificent hilltop church that not only serves as a place of worship but also offers panoramic views stretching across the town, the river, and the sea. Its architecture is a testament to the town's religious devotion and its commitment to preserving its heritage.

Undergraduate students will be registered for NTRI 5380: Study and Travel in Nutrition, Dietetics and Hospitality and will receive 40 shadowing hours during their time in Portugal.
