Our House and The Nourish Foundation
This semester I interned at Our House Auburn and The Nourish Foundation. Our House Auburn is a ministry that serves the children and families in Auburn Public Housing. They aim to meet the educational, social, spiritual needs of the children in the community by providing consistent tutoring, Bible study, and various events throughout the semester. I have served as a volunteer at Our House for the past 2 years and even worked on the summer staff in 2022. The Nourish Foundation is a nonprofit in Opelika that provides multidisciplinary care to low-income families and delivers fresh produce to families that are food insecure. They holistically treat patients with lifestyle illnesses like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, obesity or metabolic syndrome. These two nonprofits serve differently but both have a mission to love and care for families in the Auburn-Opelika area.
As an intern, I have served in various roles of these nonprofits. At Our House, one of my main roles is to manage the younger students’ play and tutoring shifts. Through this, I have been able to grow in my relationships with the children and other volunteers. At Nourish, I deliver many different administrative tasks. Although, one of my favorite aspects is getting to know the patients and conducting their pre-appointment surveys. I have also been able to help with event planning of both nonprofits over the course of the semester, like the Our House holiday parties and Nourish’s upcoming dinner in downtown Opelika. The experience I have gained working for these organizations has broadened my perspective on the nonprofit sector and increased my awareness of the world around me. Eventually, I would love to work full-time for a nonprofit that seeks to help others and stimulate real change in people’s lives. I have learned so much throughout this semester, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to intern at such genuine organizations.
